When looking after children of all ages, it is important to plan for emergencies rather than just to deal with the incident when it happens. Planning helps prevent accidents happening. Thinking about potential dangers gives you the opportunity to take steps to prevent them from occurring.

Some things you need to consider are:

  • Who you need to contact if something should go wrong. Make a list of contacts, maybe store it on your phone so you always have them with you.
  • How are you going to call the emergency services or medical professionals? Think about where doctors, dentist or hospitals are and how to get to them.
  • Who do you need to tell if something happens? For example, the parents and grandparents. Consider how are you going to do it.
  • What medical equipment do you need? Some examples are first aid kit, medications or foods.
  • What will you do with other children or pets should you need to go to the doctors.
  • What travel arrangements do you have and are you insured?
  • Are there any medical conditions that children in your care already have that will affect the way you care for them and how you should react in an emergency. What fire precautions can you take and what would you do in the event of a fire.
  • If you find yourself caring for additional children, maybe family or friends, what extra concerns may there be?

Carry out a risk assessment on every place you work to identify the risks and hazards and act to reduce these risks.  You will find some sheets you can use to record medications and emergency contacts in our download area.
